History of Purton Football Club

Purton Football Club began in 1924 and ran until 1968 when it disbanded for a few seasons. During its existence the club have many honours at senior, junior and youth levels.

Besides winning league titles the club have won the Wiltshire Senior Cup seven times and The Wiltshire Youth Cup three times. They have also won the Fairford Hospital Cup three times and the Arthur Shipway Cup three times.

In 1995/1996 the club were champions of the Hellenic League Div 1 title  and in 2003/2004 were champions of the Hellenic League Div 1 (West) in which they went the whole season undefeated. On both occassions the club were denied promotion because of ground criteria rulings.

President of the club is former player Alan Eastwood who has been with the club since 1972 and also acts as the Club's press officer and also produces the club's match day programme for the Hellenic and Wiltshire league sides at a cost of £2 and £1 respectively.

Chairman of the club is Gerry Phillips who is also the club's groundsman and also along with his wife Wendy runs the club's excellent tea bar. Wendy is also the Club Treasurer.

Sheila Morley is the club's Hon Secretary and Gary Norman is the Youth Chairman and Devlopment officer.

Purton field sides in Hellenic and Wilts League Premier at men's level. At youth level they run an Under 16's, 15's, 13's, 12's and 11's and at minor levels under 9's and 10's competing in the recently formed North Wilts Youth and Minors Leagues.

The club plays it games at the Red House and Bradon Forest school.

The club recieves good support for all its games. Funds are raised by players subscriptions, advertising boards, programme advertising, match sponsors and donations, weekly run lottery and annual Easter raffle.

In season 2001/2002 they won the Hellenic Supplementary Cup defeating Old Woodstock 3-1 at Abingdon.

Season 2002/2003 saw Purton gain 3rd place in the league and reach the semi final of the Hellenic Supplementary Cup going out on aggregate to Southall team in a two legged semi tie.

The main club sponsor is The Care Company which is thanks to Mr Keith Trowbridge who also runs Ashgrove House Nursing Home in Purton who has sponsored the club for many many years for which the club are immenseley grateful.
