Match Report :

Purton Cubs started their fifth game of the season still looking for their first win. The boys team play has been steadily improving as the season has progressed but still without the results to back up their performance.

Purton applied pressure straight from the start. In the first minute, Dale Crabbe superbly turned the defender and shot only for the keeper to push the shot away. In the second minute Shannon Pocock drilled in a corner from the right hand side which appeared to go straight in but Chris Stewart made sure to give the cubs a great start 1 - 0. The boys confidence grew and there was several interchange of passes all over the pitch, the weeks of training and the passing principles of the Purton coaches was beginning to come to fruition. Some of the one touch passing was delightful to watch and worth braving the early winter weather. Simon Randlesome made some good saves down low at each post to maintain Purton's lead. The boys passing and movement created other chances but failed to yield a goal. Shortly before half time, Stratton took a corner from the right which was half volleyed in at the fast post by Harmer to leave the half time score all level 1 - 1.

The second half began in the same way the first half had been played. Purton continuing to pass and move. Early in the second half, Stratton intercepted a pass deep in their own half and broke quickly to leave a one on one with Simon Randlesome. Simon could do nothing as Bibby tucked the ball underneath him to give Stratton the lead 2 - 1.

Yet another test of Purton's character. Purton showed no panic and maintained their discipline and continued to "pass and move". Dale Crabbe took possession in the attacking half and again superbly turned the defender and raced towards goal. From 15 yards out, Dale buried the ball into the back of the net to bring Purton back into the game. Simon Randlesome made a couple more saves to keep Purton level. Purton began to take control and went in search of a winner. Kieran O'Discoll, Shannon Pocock and Josh Harper each creating chances for themselves and each other. Josh Harper superbly split the defence with a pass between two defenders to leave Kieran O'Driscoll bearing down on goal. With a swing of his right foot, the ball flew into the net to give Purton their first and deserved win of the season....3 -2.

Coaches comments :

"Well, what can I say. The boys again showed superb character to come from behind and get their first win of the season. I was pleased with the passing which is what we have been practicing all season and is now beginning to show the benefits. I thought both teams played well but my boys deserved to win today. There was some good team play, and some of the boys had their best performances to date. I can't wait until the next game."
