Match Report :

Purton Cubs started their home campaign with a local derby against Lydiard Youth. The Cubs were hopeful of their first win of the season after the previous week's draw away at Ferndale.

Purton began the game with some crisp passing and neat interchanging. Purton were unlucky with a header against the bar, soon followed by a goal line clearance by the Lydiard defence from a shot by Kieran O'Driscoll. Kieran O'Driscoll soon followed this effort with a deft turn against the defender and forced the Lydiard goalkeeper into a save down by his near post. After Kieran's previous goal scoring exploits it looked like this was going to be one of those days for the young striker. Simon Randlesome made some good saves, diving bravely at the feet of the Lydiard attackers. As the first half passed away Lydiard took the lead to leave the half time score at 1-0.

The second half started with Lydiard beginning to take control and quickly added three goals to take a 4 - 0 lead. Purton made a good response and as in the previous game, showed great spirit and kept their heads held high. After some near misses, Shannon Pocock finally made the break through to score with a left foot shot into the back of the net. Purton grew in confidence and began to attack more frequently. Josh Harper then drilled in a shot to narrow the Lydiard lead to 4 -2. Purton started to believe in themselves more and tried in vain to score another. Purton's pressure grew but unfortunately time ran out, and Purton suffered their first defeat of the season...congratulations Lydiard Youth.

Coaches comments :

"A great finish to the game after disappointingly going 4 - 0 down, but the lads showed great spirit again to claw their way back and make a great second half fight back. Defeat is not such a bad thing so long as they learn this, but I cannot fault their spirit and determination. It is just a matter of time before they start to win regular."
