Match Report :

In atrocious conditions of strong wind and heavy rain, the kids of Ashton Keynes and Purton Cubs braved all the elements of an English winter to play in a good entertaining game. After a poor performance the previous game, it was hoped that the Purton boys could get back to the standards that they had set themselves, up until Christmas.

The game started with plenty of possession for Purton and it only seemed a matter of time until the first goal would be scored. A quick dead ball kick from Chris Stewart saw Shannon receive the ball on the half-way line, with his back to goal he then turned outside his marker then cut back inside another challenge and unleashed a fierce drive into the top corner ( 1-0). Ryan Norman came close to scoring twice with a long range shot which just whistled past the post and then forced a good save from the keeper with an angled shot from the left which was pushed away for a corner. However Ryan then made two goals for Dale Crabbe to make the half time score 3 - 0.

The second half started with a flourish and Dale Crabbe soon completed his hat trick with another assist from Ryan Norman. Soon after, Kieran's shot beat the keeper but rebounded back off the post, Shannon was first to react to the loose ball and tapped it into the empty net. After a goalmouth scramble Shannon dispossessed a defender trying to walk the ball out of the box, left him for dead with a superb turn reminiscent of the Dutch master - Cruyff, and beat the keeper at his near post to complete his hat-trick.

Ashton Keynes grabbed a goal, to make it 6 - 1. Ryan Norman then had a long shot which Dale Crabbe got a touch on to make it four goals in his new boots. Shannon then also made it four goals for himself when he received the ball on the right just inside the Ashton half and single mindedly sped off towards goal. After letting fly his shot was deflected past the overworked keeper by a defender. After another goal from Ashton Keynes, Kieran O'Discoll then finished the scoring with a shot from outside the box to make the final score 9 - 2.

Coaches comments :

"The weather was terrible and I did not expect the game to be played. Credit to all the kids from Ashton Keynes and Purton for playing in such bad weather. Their enthusiasm was unbelievable. I am much happier with the level of performance this week from my guys. I thought that Kieran did a good captain's job in leading the team with lots of hard work and effort, and there was also good performances from Jamie and Ryan."
